turbo in a 1st gen

Im becoming more and more interested in turboing my 1st gen neon since doing a srt4 swap seems like it would be to much work. well the reason im putting this post up is because i want to see if it would be safe to turbo my sohc engine and if so what all would i need. and if any one has a turbo kit for sale?

Yeah, it's safe, but you do have to sorta be prepared to blow something up. A stock-internal Neon engine can handle 9-10psi safely with a good tune.

As for what you need to do this to a SOHC, there are a few avenues you can go down. One would be to purchase a complete kit from Hahn or Chill Factory. Another is to buy an SRT-4 turbo/manifold and the adaptor to bolt it to a SOHC head, or you could get an SOHC-specific turbo manifold and the turbo of your choice. Both of the latter two would require you to fabricate piping and piece together a fuel system, among other things.

It's a daunting task for a n00b, I have a decent mechanical background and I still spent about a year researching my own turbo project (which will finally be going on in a couple weeks when I get moved into my new house) Even after all that reading and studying of pics, I still need to figure out the oil and coolant lines to the turbo and some other small things.

I would highly suggest buying the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell, and spend a lot of time reading posts and asking questions in the Forced Induction forum at neons.org.

I know quite a bit about turbos as well, 3 of the 5 cars I've owned are turbocharged and you have to learn about them to keep and properly maintain them, not to mention modifying them.


Your best bet would be to get a complete turbo kit, less guess work and all the parts and instructions are included. It is cheaper to part out other turbo cars' parts and piece it together, but that requires vast amounts of turbocharging knowledge and no guarantee on any of the parts.

I've thought about twin turbocharging my Roadrunner, but I prefer the obscene looks of a nice blower exploding out through the hood. :twisted: Either way I couldn't afford it anyway. :cry:
