I've heard that on a 1st gen you need to replace the water pump when you replace the timing belt.

Anyone else heard of this?

You don't have to change the water pump, it's just a good idea while you have all the stuff apart. Same goes for 2nd gens as well, since it is virtually the same motor.

the reason some recommend replacing it is because the pulley on the old one has been used the low stress from the worn out belt. the new taught belt may put a lot of undue stress on the pulley causing it to fail, and in turn not pump coolant through the engine.
